Catholic and Christian churches will go ahead with their usual midnight masses for Christmas day following assurances from the Defence authorities that adequate security will be provided.

The Catholic Church’s communication division spokesman said throughout the country, they were planning to hold  midnight masses as usual on the 24th night.

He said Cardinal Malcom Ranjith had requested the Government to provide additional security in view of the Easter Sunday suicide bomb attacks.

Meanwhile, other Christian churches which usually conduct midnight services were also planning to conduct their services as usual.

The Defence Ministry said the armed services and the Police would be deployed to provide security during the festive season and additional security personnel had already been deployed.

The ministry said the security forces were also working with vigilance committees to provide security to places of worship, public places and shopping malls.

The Western Province’s Senior Deputy Inspector General Deshabandu Tennakoon said that security arrangements had already come into operation with mobile patrols backing them.

He said the Special Task Force was also on alert.
