The Sri Lanka army and private donors are engaged in a joint effort to build houses to low income families in Jaffna.

As part of this programme two houses that were completed were handed over on December 17, at an event held at Point Pedro. Major General Ruwan Wanigasuriya, who is in command of the army in Jaffna, attended was chief guest.

He said the army was in the process of building 27 such houses in the Jaffna district.

Kuma Weerasooriya who assisted financially to build the two houses said he decided to finance the project after seeing the problems faced by the people.

Meanwhile the Jaffna District Secretary, Nagalingam Vethanayahan said that even though 10 years had passed since the end of the 30-year war many Jaffna residents still faced housing problems.

“Around 30,000 families are registered as homeless and of them 10,000 have been given housing. Apart from that 540 families still live in welfare centres,” he said.
