The Catholic Bishops’ Conference in a Christmas message has urged the people to take part in spiritual activities, while paying attention to the poor and being sensitive to the needs of those who are suffering.

“The birth of Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem is a universal call towards a conversion so we can be more sensitive to the needs of others, irrespective of differences,” the Bishops said.

They said poverty could be alleviated through fair economic structures. They also said people could develop only in a society where there is mutual respect, justice and peace.

“Sustainable economic development is needed for the country, where the people and the environment will be respected and protected. Everyone has to commit sincerely to make this happen.

Christmas cannot and should not be the celebration of a historic event. It is an occasion to understand the real depth of our Christian faith and value of life so that we can experience it in our society,” they said.

The Catholic Bishops said the true joy of Christmas came from a conversion of the heart and the acceptance of Jesus as Lord and Saviour.

“We need to concentrate on the spiritual aspect of Christmas and not the external aspects, especially in remembrance of the Easter Sunday tragedy.

Let us commit ourselves to change everything in our midst that does not align with God’s holy will, by becoming agents of peace and harmony. We must put aside petty differences, which are obstacles to the common good, as we thank God for the beautiful gift of Jesus. Let us pray to be renewed by the Spirit, and made witnesses, so that we can create a loving world. We wish all our faithful fellow citizens a blessed Christmas,” the Catholic Bishops’ said.
