625 schools to be upgraded as national schools

The Government is to upgrade 625 more schools as national schools, minimizing the disparity on district basis.

Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said the current distribution of national schools was unfair as some of the educational divisions did not even have one national school.

He said that at least two or three schools would be identified from every district to be upgraded as national schools.

He said a technical committee would be appointed to identify the schools to be upgraded.

“This will be a better concept than converting the nearest school as the best school,” he said, in an apparent reference to the previous government’s policy.

He said, in a few months, the Government would upgrade the schools by providing them with the required principals, teachers, lab and other infrastructure facilities.

At present, there are only 374 national schools mainly in the main towns and districts.

“We feel there is a political pattern in upgrading schools to national schools. We will stop that practice,” the minister said. (DW)
