An elderly Bhikkhuni was killed in an attack by an elephant in Naula, Matale yesterday.   There has been several such attacks by elephants in the Puttalam and Galawela areas.

The police said Venerable Atharagalla Gnamiththa, 66, had suffered fatal injuries. She had lived in the area for more than five years.    Villagers say they have suffered for decades due to rogue elephants.

Meanwhile, a wild elephant found dead near a house in Medawachchiya, Aluwakotuwa is believed to have been electrocuted. A burn injury had been visible on its trunk.  The owners of the house informed the wildlife authorities via the Gramasevaka in the respective area.

The postmortem done by Dr. Chandana Jayasinghe of the Anuradhapura wildlife division, had determined that the elephant died as a result of electrocution. The chief monk of Sri Aloka Pabbatha Viharaya, Ven Kirigalwewa Gnanaloka Thero said he was saddened that elephant deaths are continuing.

“The problematic elephants in Horowpathana break into the village by destroying the electronic fences. As we have a new wildlife minister, I request that he take initiatives to renovate the inactive electric fences and fix the fences in the holding area.’’
