Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake on Friday told Council members that there were no moves to dissolve the council and place it under a special commissioner.

The assurance was given after several members raised concerns that the Colombo Municipal Council was to be brought under a special commissioner.

“The President and the Prime Minister respect democracy and have said that the council will be allowed to function its remaining two and a half years. Ms Senanayake said.

She said she appreciated the new government’s move to beautify Colombo city. She also said the support extended by the Environmental Police in this effort was important.

Meanwhile JVP council member Dr Ranil Jayasena has resigned from the council membership, citing personal reasons. JVP’s General Secretary Tilvin Silva has named 50-year- old H.D. Rohan Samantha Weerasinghe (50) who represents Wellawatte to fill the vacancy.
