New brooms clean well

After being sworn in as Plantations and Export Agriculture Minister, Ramesh Pathirana was seen engaged in a city clean up programme in Galle yesterday morning.

The day’s programme began after garlanding the statue of his father the late Richard Pathirana, one time Minister of Education and Higher Education. The statue is situated in front of the Galle bus stand.

Former provincial councillor Baddegama Samitha Thera and a large crowd of people also took part in the cleaning programme. The Thera also handed over a memorandum to Minister Pathirana requesting a ban on the cultivation of oil palm (Katu Pol wagawa) in the Galle District.

The clean up programme included the area of the international cricket grounds, the football grounds, the market area, Galle bus stand and the marine park area.
