The  Ministry of Education (MoE) has decided to make English Reading & Listening tests compulsory at Term tests from Grade 6 onwards, in a fresh attempt to promote English among students, said MoE Secretary M.N. Ranasinghe.

Mr Ranasinghe said that a gazette notification has been issued to make English Reading & Listening tests compulsory for Grades 6, 7 and 8 from next year, and the other classes thereafter.

He said they have noticed that students’ English communication skills were comparatively low and therefore, they were looking at ways of improving them.
