Champions MAS Holdings, won three divisions

MAS Holdings (MAS) dominated the 43rd Annual Mercantile 7s Hockey tournament to emerge champions in three of the six  divisions at the P. Sara Stadium last weekend. MAS were champions in the ‘A’, ‘D’ and ‘F’ divisions.

Organised by the Mercantile Hockey Association, Allianz Insurance were the main sponsors, with Peoples Leasing and Finance and Hilton Colombo as the co-sponsors.

The ‘A’ Division final between MAS ‘A’ and HNB ‘A’, produced hockey of a high standard as both teams were evenly matched. HNB scored the first goal of the match through Damith Bandara, to lead 1-0 lead. But it was short lived, as MAS’ Shahid Kuthubdeen equalised off a penalty stroke to make it 1-1 at the short whistle.

The second half was more competitive as both sides made desperate attempts at scoring but the strong defence of both sides prevented any scoring, when the long whistle went with the scores level at 1-1.

The game was decided on penalty strokes with MAS winning 2-1 to walk away with the Dennis De Rosayro Champions Trophy. HNB ‘A was awarded the MHA Trophy as runner-up.
