Assistant Director of Education, Health & Physical Education, Negombo Zonal Education Office, Ajith Adhikari, presiding over the Badge wearing ceremony of 32 Junior Scouts of Sri Vijaya Kanishta Vidyalaya, Kaluwarippuwa, West Katana, held at the school last week, said that being a Scout means you know how to work with others outside the classroom.

“I never fail to accept invitations, especially, by this type of school, though they are far away, because these children need our attention, and our visits encourage them to achieve their targets and be useful citizens in future.,” he said. “Only teaching, confined to a four walled room, is not the real education . To mould a character in the person of a child, we should get them involved in extracurricuar activities like Scouting. Hence, this is a forward step you have taken in your life,” he said.

“We know it is amidst many difficulties these children come to school to study, and you have shown your desire to be a Scout and work for the society. This should be highly appreciated. The Negombo Zonal Education Office extends its warm wishes to you on this occasion.”

Principal Mrs I.A.D.P. Nishanthi, in her speech, said, “I appeal to the authorities to pay more attention to these poor children and look after their needs. I am happy we were able to start a Scouts troop at this school, after quite a long time in its history.”

The ceremony was attended by Rev Dodanduwe Ananda Thera -Sri Ananda Maha Viharaya Kaluwarippuwa, former DC of Negombo Scouts, Elmo Fernando, Principals of neighbouring schools, Scout Leaders in the District, well-wishers and parents.

Mr K.A.D.D. Kasthurirathna and Mrs H.D.C. Susanthi were in charge of the Scouts and it was due to their dedication such a Scouts troop was  formed, bringing a smile to the faces of the little Scouts, having joined the worldwide Scouts movement formed by Lord Baden Powell in 1907, in the Brownsea Island in London, with a small group of 20 boys.
