Books – one’s silent companion

Most of us love to read. Books, for some, mean a lot. Everyone must be aware that reading is not merely wasting time, but adding something to your brain. Whether it’s a biography, comic or encyclopedia you read; everything helps you in success.

Technology has introduced readers to a way of being an owner of a huge number of books, without occupying much space. e-books and e-readers allow us to browse many books. It saves a lot of time, rather than running to the bookstore and back again. There is no problem of space, too. You can have hundreds of e-books in your e-reader, yet it only occupies the space of the e-reader. It is a convenient way of reading.

E-readers do have some drawbacks for real ‘book-lovers’. The ability of reading is what e-readers provide, but it does not give a big effect as a book does to a
book-lover. Book-lovers, in my opinion, like to feel themselves being the owner of a lot of books. The sight of many books on a rack is much more satisfying than running the finger on the screen of an e-reader showing a list of books. Also, the touch of a physical book brings much more happiness while reading than the touch of an e-reader in the hand.

Overall, e-readers have a massive difference than a book to a book-lover. This doesn’t mean that e-readers are disadvantageous, but an e-book just feels more like an ‘unreal book’ for book-lovers.

Traditional Kandyan Dancing

This is also known as upcountry dancing. This is one of the famous dances in Sri Lanka. This comes from a far history. This dancing uses some musical instruments like Udarata-getaberaya, Thalampata etc.

Now this dancing type has become a famous cultural event in Sri Lanka among tourists and also Sri Lankans. Now this dance is a main event in the Dalada Perahera. This is one of the most wonderful dances.

My country

The name of my country is
Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean. It is so beautiful that it is called the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean.’ Its nearest neighbour is India. The capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte. Colombo is the commercial and administrative centre.

Sri Lanka has a population of more than 21 million people.
Sri Lanka has a hot, wet climate.
The average temperature is 290C. Coconut, rubber and tea are the main crops in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a multi-racial and multi-religious country. There are Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers living here.

The national tree of Sri Lanka is Na tree. The national flower is Nil Manel. There are many rivers, mountains and waterfalls here.
Sri Lankan tea is famous all over the world. It is no wonder that tourism too has become a major foreign exchange earner.

I love my country very much.

A famous person I admire

Famous people include the best writers, rulers, singers and actors. Though writers are admired for their writing, singers and actors are admired for what they look like.

I admire some famous people, but not for what they look like on the outside, but for what they really are inside.

One of the people I admire must is
Anne Frank, the teenage holocaust diarist, who wrote about the war as a person in hiding. By reading her beautifully written diary, I found out about her ‘inner self,’ as she calls it.

She had a very strong character.
She was always having troubles with others, but she bore it all inside her.
For this I admire her.

I also admire her ability to put herself in someone else’s shoes and
look at certain situations from his or her point of view. She usually judged people well in this way.

She was also able to remain positive, even though she was constantly getting news about the war from the radio and their helpers. This is something for every one of us to learn. I also admire her for being able to judge herself.
She even wrote, “In everything I do,
I can watch myself as if I were a stranger. I can stand across from the everyday Anne and without being biased or making excuses, watch what she’s doing, both good and the bad.”

Anne Frank is a famous girl who has a very admirable personality. I admire her a lot.
