Anjalika emerges Women’s Singles Champion

Anjalika Kurera the young girl from Ave Maria Convent continued champion winning streak when she clinched the Women’s Singles title of the 104th National Tennis Championship when she coasted to a convincing two sets to nil against top seeded Janali Manamperi in the final played at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo yesterday.

Anjalika was in terrific form since the tournament when she overcame her opponents with ease and in the run up to the final she outclassed the defending champion Anika Seneviratne with the minimum of fuss in the semi final. In fact this was her second successive win against Anika who she a few weeks ago defeated in the semi final of the 104th Colombo Championship and when on to clinch the Women’s Open singles title.

Anjalika was seeded fourth and in the run up to the final she overcame Kemalie Herath in the quarter final and second seeded and defending champion Anika Seneviratne. Anjalika will be aiming to win her second title today when she partners Rukhiska Wijesuriya against the top seeded sisters Anika and Alana Seneviratne in the Women’s Open doubles final.

Apart from this final the Men’s singles final will also be played concurrently with top seeded Sharmal Dissanayake neeting Heera Ashiq and Sharmal will be looking forward to clinch the title for the fifth successive year. Meanwhile in the Wheelchair tennis nationals saw D.S.R. Dharmasena winning two titles as he clinched the singles title defeating R.A.S.L. Ranaweera by two sets to nil and then partnered by Ranaweera went on to bag the doubles title by overcoming the pair of N.R.L. Jayasundara and W.P.J. Wijesiri by two sets to one.

Wheel Chair Singles – D.S.R. Dharmasena beat R.A.S.L.Ranaweera 2-0 (6/1, 4/6, (6/2).
Wheelchair Doubles – D.S.R. Dharmasena/R.A.S.L. Ranaweera beat N.R.L. Jayasundara/W.P.J. Wijesiri 2-1 (6/2, 6/1).
