The Peace Tree found in the historical Victoria Park in Nuwara Eliya turns 100 on July 19.

Standing tall at 100: The cyprus tree planted by Lady Wedabon

A cyprus tree was planted by Lady Wedabon, the wife of the then British GA of Nuwara Eliya M.M. Wedabon, about eight months after World War 1 ended.

The tree stands tall among many other trees that have been planted at this park to commemorate various events.

While she planted the tree in hope of peace after the brutality of World War 1, it also stands as a silent tribute to 17 residents of Nuwara Eliya who died fighting for the allied forces. A monument also stands in memory of them.

The Municipal Council and its mayor Chandana Lal Karunaratne have organised a commemoration ceremony on July 19, to mark 100 years of this silent sentinel of peace.
