The activities of the Nuwara Eliya District Secretary’s Office have been interrupted due to a shortage of technical officers, a senior officer said.

The Planning Director of the Nuwara Eliya District Secretary’s Office, Chinthaka Hettiarachchi pointed out that they are short of 11 technical officers. He said this at the District Coordination Committee, which was co-chaired by Minister of Plantation Industries, Navin Dissanayake and MP K K Piyadasa.

“We need to have 12 technical officers in service, yet we only have one technical officer. We have not given up on our work; somehow we manage to get our work done with the support of divisional secretaries and officials attached to their offices,” he said.

Mr Hettiarachchi explained that they were able to engage in development activities with the support of the Matale District Secretary, as he had permitted technical officers from his office to extend their support.

Nuwara Eliya District Secretary Rohitha Pushpakumara said that he had informed the authorities concerned.

“We cannot solve the problem ourselves; therefore we gave some of the projects to the Pradeshiya Sabha. We even wrote to the Public Services Commission. They notified us to name five retired technical officers and two final year students who are studying at technical schools to be recruited on a contract basis,” he said.
