A night time temperature drop is likely in the next few days in most parts of the country, a senior Meteorology Department official said. The official said that due to the cold weather, Nuwara Eliya and other upcountry areas could expect morning frost.
According to the Meteorology Department, the lowest temperature of 5.1 Celsius was reported from Nuwara Eliya yesterday.

In addition, the official said night time low temperatures were also reported yesterday from Bandarawela (9.1C), Katugasthota (15.1C), Badulla (15.2C), Vavuniya (17.4C), Jaffna (17.8 C) and Anuradhapura (18.9C) yesterday.
In usually hot areas of Jaffna, Vavuniya and Anuradapura, the day time temperature were also relatively low — Jaffna 28.6C, Vavuniya 28.9C and Anuradhapura 29 C.

Meanwhile, there has been little or no rain in the hydro catchment areas. Metrological Department Director Anusha Warnasooriya explained that normally January had mildly cold weather but this year due to dry winds flowing towards India, the Sri Lankan atmosphere was made cooler.

She said the cold weather would remain for a few more days but if the wind pattern changed, the weather also would change accordingly.
