Was that a flying kitchen? No it was a kite

A kitchen, military tank, bird cage and a replica of a sea tiger vessel were some of the objects that dotted the sky as thousands of people flocked to a beach that was abuzz with an air of festivity in Valvettithurai, Jaffna, on Thai Pongal day, last Tuesday.

The sky dotted with kites of all shapes and sizes

The flying objects were just some of the creative kites that took to the skies as part of the annual kite competition organised by the Valvettithurai Vigneswara Community centre, on the Uthayasooriyan beach.

Many of the creations were life-like and three dimensional. Some of the other eye-catching kites included a family celebrating Thai Pongal, Pushpaka Vimana- a mythological flying palace, a play school and a huge replica of the historic ‘Annapoorani’ sailing vessel that landed on the crowds below, much to their amusement.

‘Annapoorani was built and operated by sailors from Valvettithurai and even made a historic voyage to the USA in the 1930s.

The flying kitchen eventually bagged the first prize-a sovereign gold coin- for its minute details of a typical household kitchen,at the competition that saw about 80 kites on display.
