Following an error in a letter issued by the Examinations Department (ED) to the marking centres on payments to teachers marking the Maths paper, several teachers refrained from paper marking.

The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said that the ED had inadvertently typed Rs70 an hour instead of Rs90, and teachers at marking centres had protested against the reduced payment by stopping work for a few hours.

The matter was taken up immediately by Unions, and inquiries revealed it was a mistake on the part of the ED.

“ED Commissioner, Sanath Pujitha accepted that it was a mistake, and we had to speak to the teachers, persuading them to resume the marking of the exam scripts,” CTU General Secretary, Joseph Stalin said. The evaluation of the 2018 GCE Ordinary Level examination papers commenced on 23 December. Around 45,000 teachers across the country are involved in the script marking. The results are expected by January.

It is also reported that teachers who marked the GCE Advanced Level Geography paper are yet to be paid. Around 2,000 invigilators who supervised at centres at the Advanced Level exams are also yet to be paid.
