The Education Ministry has directed schools to launch a clean up campaign on December 30 and 31 to ensure that mosquito breeding grounds are destroyed to minimise the spread of dengue, a Ministry spokesman said.

In addition to schools, Education Faculties, Teacher Training Colleges and Zonal Education Offices have also been told to carry out similar campaigns on their premises. Provincial Education Offices have been informed to implement the programme.

The Ministry said they expect school principals, teachers, students and their parents to be involved in the programme. The number of dengue cases have been relatively low this year, but there has been a trend where dengue cases rise after low dengue figures in a previous year. -DW
