Water level at Moragahakanda hydro-power resevoir at 84%

The Morakanda reservoir of the upper Elahera project will feed 1200 tanks and the Wayabha canal will feed 303 village tanks and 31 tanks in the Matale – Laggala area alone, in addition to nearly 13 small tanks along the way.

P.G. Dayananda, project PRO, during a media briefing on the progress of work on the project said the final hydro power reservoir under the Mahaveli Moragahakanda scheme had filled up to 84% of its capacity by 15th of this month.

The canal carries irrigation water to the upper Elahera project 94 km away he said, adding 26 km of the canal will be running under ground due to environmental concerns.

Project Engineer D.S. Bandara, briefing the media said water levels at the tank had reached 3 metres below spill level and needed another 90 million sqm to reach full capacity. He said if another 20 days of rainfall were received the tank would be filled to capacity and if the monsoon developed, they would be able to open the flood gates.

He said even that at present water for irrigation purposes were being released.
