Police and the Special Task Force (STF) personnel have been placed on standby in and around Colombo City while leave has been cancelled for all police officers.
The STF has been deployed to safeguard strategic locations in and around Colombo City. They include the state electronic media institutions, the Speaker’s residence, the Presidential Secretariat and the residences of both Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the newly appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said that on a directive from the Inspector General of Police, leave was cancelled and officers on leave had been asked to report to the respective stations for duty. The IGP has given instructions to all Senior DIGs, DIGs and OICs of all police stations to ensure the law and order are maintained.

In Colombo, police will maintain a high visibility presence in public places. Further, all emergency services have been requested to remain on stand by to respond to any eventuality.
