The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) last week charged that the Government is propagating private schools and universities to de-motivate students from the State Education sector. CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the Union had brought to the notice of the Ministry of Education (MoE) the activities carried out to discourage students from learning in public schools.

He said the Zonal Education Offices are using State school Principals to popularise private schools and universities among the students.
The Principals, he said, are being asked to belittle Education in the government schools and universities so that, students and parents will voluntarily opt for private education.

He charged that, the Government, under its Public-Private Partnership (PPP) strategy for the Education sector, is employing several methods to move students away from public sector Education. The MoE, it is learnt, is using retired personnel who held high positions in the Education sector to carry out the campaign.

Also, in schools, the propaganda is carried out during School Development Society meetings held regularly. He said that administrators from the private education sector are invited to deliver speeches and talk to students on the value of studying in private universities and schools.
“This is wrong and we condemn this action,” Mr Stalin said.
