Ross Fernando brothers, Ross Abner and Ross Clever powered St. Joseph’s College Colombo to the title at the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association (SLSHA) All-Island Inter-School Under-16 Division ‘B’ Hockey Championship 2018 for boys concluded at Edward Park Hockey ground in Matale. They outsmarted the much fancied Vidyaloka College, Galle team with a final score of 2-0 in the final.

The closely contested final between St. Joseph’s Colombo and Vidyaloka Galle saw centre forward Ross Abner firing the first goal of the two goals in the third minute of play to lead by 1-0 at short whistle, while his brother, left half Ross Clever, scored the other goal for his school in the 22nd minute of play to give his school 2-0 win and the title.

Vidyaloka Galle outplayed their home town rivals Mahinda College by 2-0 while St. Joseph’s Colombo had the better of Ananda Central College Colombo 15, 1-0 in the respective semi-finals. In the playoff for the third place, Ananda Central Colombo 15 beat Mahinda Galle 3-2 on penalties after a scoreless draw at full time.

Keith Joshua of St. Joseph’s was named the Best Player while the award the Best Goalkeeper went to Danuja Nethsara of Vidyaloka Galle.

A total of 16 boys teams across the island participated in the Division ‘B’ competition conducted by SLSHA. - L.D. Chandrasiri, Matale Sports
