The facility of Smart Classrooms, under the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) programme to provide high-tech facilities for Educational activities, will be given to 150 more schools. This would be the final phase of the programme under which a total of 342 schools will have the option to be used as a teaching facility.

Under the final phase, the MoE targets 50,000 students to benefit, at a cost of Rs 1,000 million, for the purchase of tabs, laptops and infrastructure facilities.
The programme was first launched in 42 schools in 2016 and thereafter, in Stage II, 150 more schools were given the facility.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said there were limitations in giving the facility to all schools, as they require certain basic facilities such as internet..
He said, as facilities to other schools improve, they intend providing the Smart Classroom facilities to other schools as well in the future.

He said that, though the facility appeared to be new in Sri Lanka, in foreign countries it was being used widely. Minister Kariyawasam said the relevant content too has now been developed.

He said that, students allowed to continue their education until 13 years, will also have the option to learn IT related studies in future. – DW
