433 Schools face closure for want of students

The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin said that around 433 schools in the country are faced with closure because of the decline in the number of students attending those schools.

He reasoned that, the situation has risen because most schools do not adhere to the maximum of 35 students in a classroom. A Supreme Court order, No. SC/FR 2032/11/CPR in 2016, had directed that schools have small classrooms with a maximum of 35 students. However, the popular schools have been ignoring the directive and are continuing to admit/entol excess students, thereby pushing some schools to to lose students, resulting in their closure.

Lack of development and the non-availability of basic facilities are also other contributory factors for the closure. “The Government is turning a blind eye, as this is what it wants,” Mr Stalin said. – CC
