Bathing spots for elephants, especially tuskers, have run dry and these elephants now have to rely on pipe borne water for bathing within the City of Kandy. The fountain in front of the Pattini Devale has become one of the main bathing points for most elephants after their nightly procession and inevitably the fountain has sustained damages.

Tuskers cool off

The other points for elephants to bathe are the Mahaweli River at Tennakumbura and Katugastota. The Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela decided to construct a large pool and a massive stable for the tuskers, who are nine in number. The Minister of Megapolis, Patali Champika Ranawaka was also involved in the project, and on August 15 this massive pool, or pond, for tuskers was opened at an auspicious time.

Pirith water was poured in at the ceremonial opening of the pond which can hold five tuskers at one time. The Sri Dalada Maligawa tuskers now have a custom-built pond for them to bathe in.
