Barman arrested for selling liquor sans licence

A leading Tourist Hotel in Ambakandawila, Chilaw, was raided by the Crime Division of the Excise Department, for selling liquor without a licence.
The raid followed complaints by area residents. The 35-year-old barman was arrested for selling foreign and local liquor worth over Rs 900,000, sans a licence.

Investigations revealed that the Tourist hotel’s liquor licence which expired in 2017, had not been renewed, while the liquor was sold at exorbitant prices.
The raid was conducted by OIC- Excise Crime Division, Chief inspector A.R. Lambert and his staff on the instructions of the Commissioner General of Excise and his Deputy M.B. Wanasuriya. The suspect has been released on Excise bail and the case will be filed at the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court on August 30.
