S. Siriwardene, a veteran trade unionist from the early 1950s, passed away yesterday. According to the Ceylon Federation of Labour (CFL), Mr. Siriwardene was associated with the late Philip Gunawardene in his trade union work. He was an active practitioner at the country’s labour tribunals from the time they came into being until he fell ill in 2005.

The CFL said his services as General Secretary of the All Ceylon Commercial and Industrial Workers’ Union and the CFL were etched in the memory of those who remember him as a consistent fighter for workers’ rights. Mr. Siriwardene was a leading member of the LSSP and served in the party’s Central Committee and politburo. His funeral takes place tomorrow at the General Cemetery in Borella.
