The Ministry of Education (MoE) has put into effect a change to the Suraksha Insurance scheme, so that beneficiaries will have the Insurance company’s contribution deducted from the bill, before sending it for settlement.

On producing the Insurance Card (IC) on admission, the company will be in informed and the deduction made accordingly.
Education Minister Akila Virja Kariyawasam said that 9 private hospitals have already agreed to the scheme, while negotiations are currently underway with other hospitals as well..

They will also be entitled to a discount of 20% on Room Charges and Consultancy Fees. Some 16,000 students had requested for benefits from the scheme, since its introduction last year, while about 1.3 million students are yet to be issued with their ICs.
He said some students had their claims rejected due to shortcomings in their ICs, and the related principals need to re-register those students. – DW
