Police have arrested three suspects this week over the murder and sexual abuse of a six-year-old girl in Kaatupulam, a remote village in Chulipuram, Jaffna. The victim Sivaneswaran Rejina was found dead in a domestic well close to her home on Monday.

Mallakam magistrate A. Aanatharajah remanded all three suspects, whose ages range from 17 to 25 years, until July 11. Police said one of the main suspects had confessed to killing the girl.

The Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) said the girl had been sexually abused and strangled before being dumped into the well. Preliminary police investigations have revealed that the murder may have been a revenge killing connected to a petty brawl the victim’s father had had with his friends.

Many protests were held in various parts of the North this week condemning the inhuman killing and against increasing incidents of assaults and abuse against women and children. The protestors urged Government officials to ensure law and order in the region.
