Scaffolding used in the construction of a 12-storeyed hotel, consisting of 271 rooms and a shopping mall, have collapsed on the roof of an art shop situated on the Galle Road, close to the boundary of the Marine Drive.

The incident took place at around midnight last Sunday when the scaffolding from the hotel premises was being removed. The scaffolding collapsed over the roof causing extensive damage to water lines resulting in flooding of the shop premises.

The shop owner, who requested anonymity, said that his premises housed many artifacts, one-of-a-kind photographs, rare paintings and carpets. He had complained to the Urban Development Authority, Municipal Council and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) requesting them to take action.
