Yashodha Range Bandara (25) was, on Friday (8), remanded in custody till June 12, by the Acting Nugegoda Magistrate who visited the hospital, after police arrested the suspect.

Mr Bandara and Puttalam Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) Chairman Anjana Sandaruwan were injured after the double cab they were in smashed into a house at Bangadeniya-Kottapitiya Junction, along the Chilaw-Puttalam Main Road, around 12.50 a.m. on Wednesday (6).

Mr Bandara, who is alleged to have been behind the wheel at the time of the incident and could not be found immediately, was later located at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital, where he was arrested by police.

He is currently being treated under guard by Prison Officers. Prisons Spokesman Thushara Upuldeniya said, producing the suspect in court would depend on the advice of doctors treating him, adding that, if Mr Bandara is discharged, he would be produced in court. If, however, his injuries are still deemed to be too severe, a medical report detailing this would be produced in court. The Magistrate can then make a determination on whether to further remand the suspect or release him on bail.

Meanwhile, police said that the vehicle bearing registration number WP PH 0147, which Mr Bandara was driving at the time of the accident, belonged to the State Ministry of Irrigation & Water Resources Management. Ministry Secretary J.M. Kapila Jayasekara, in a statement to Arachchikattuwa Police, said the vehicle had been released to Yashodha Range Bandara, who functioned as the Ministry’s Media Secretary. Police are due to convey this information to the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court.
