A woman who was travelling as a pillion rider with her umbrella opened died of severe injuries that she sustained after she was blown off and hit her head, a coroner’s court heard this week.

The victim who was identified as Nawaratne Menike 66, from Polpitigama in Kurunegala District had been offered a lift by the rider on June 4, to go to her daughter’s place some 12 km away from his house. She had got onto the bike with her umbrella opened due to the inclement weather.

Sumudhu Prasanna, the motorcycle rider said the wind was so strong that he lost control of the bike that had fallen. The victim was rushed to Kurunegala Hospital and later transferred to the National Hospital where she passed away.

Colombo JMO Dr, Rahul Haq said death was due to severe head injuries and internal damage. City Coroner Iresha Deshani Samaraweera returned a verdict of accidental death.
