Incessant rain that fell on the Galle International Cricket Stadium deprived Richmond College from forcing a decision in the 113th Lovers Quarrel last evening. Mahinda set a target of 203 runs to win in the final session of play were two wickets down for twenty runs when rain put an end to further play.

After winning the toss Dhanjaya Lakshan elected to bat first hoping to go for a big score but Mahinda’s left arm spin duo Pasan Pethangoda, Navod Paranvithana captured eight wickets between them to restrict Richmond to 170 a few minutes before tea. Duveen Kalansooriya topped the score card with 42 runs while skipper Dhananjaya Lakshan chipped in with 33. Pasan Pethangoda captured five wickets and Navod Paranavithana was rewarded with three victims.

Navod Paranavithana (27) and Hansika Welihinda opening the batting for Mahinda put on 46 runs for the first wicket but lost three quick wickets. One by Sandun Mendis and two by Dilum Sudeera saw them on 70-3 at stumps on Day One. When play resumed this morning Mendis and Sudeera shared the wickets to restrict Mahinda to 118 in the first session of play. Only openers Paranavithana and Welihinda (26) made notable performances with the bat. Sandun and Dilum were rewarded with five-wicket hauls.

Richmond anchored by an unbeaten 71 off 79 balls by Thaveesha Abhishek and a useful 20 runs by Adithya Siriwardena, declared their second essay at 150-4 setting Mahinda a victory target of 203.

Siriwardena, opening the bowling for Richmond, was rewarded with a wicket in the first ball of Mahinda’s second essay and another wicket a few overs later to have Mahinda in trouble at 6-2. But the weather gods intervened a few minutes later to see an end to the game and deprive Richmond from forcing a decision
