A three-day theatre festival with a stylish classical play by Professor Ediriweera Sarathchandra, a drama prescribed for exam curriculum and a comedy will go on the boards from March 2 to 4 at the Lionel Wendt theatre, Colombo.

The festival will kick off with ‘Aluth Horek One’ produced by Ajith Mendis’ at 3.30 pm and 7 pm. It stars Roshan Pilapitiya, Saman Hemarathna, Mahinda Pathirage, Mihiri Priyangani, Kumari Senaratne and Samantha Paranaliyanage. Music director is Anthony Surendran.

The new production of Henry Jayasena’s “Kuveni” done by Prasannajith Abeysuriya will be staged on March 3.

The new production is by Prasannajith Abeysuriya, the play was originally produced by H. M. Bandara and its music direction is by Shantha Peiris. Stage setting by Dasun Bandara and choreography and costume designing is by Prasannajith himself.

‘Kuweni’ which was released as an experimental play during the 60’s won six awards including the best drama at the National Drama festival.

With Nimal Jayasinghe who was in the oirignal cast the other players include Kasuni Ganewatte, Anuradha Mallawarachci, S. I. Samarakkody, Tharaka Kurundukarakage, Nisansala Gunawardena, Samith Palliyawatte, Rangajith Abeysuriiya, Kasun Rathugamagedara, Danushka Samaranayake, Gimhani Athaauda, Isuru Dissanayake, Sanchala Kohombagahage, Hirushan Hettiarachchi, Akalanka Liyanarachchi, Sudarshana Sakrage, Anusha Madhusha.

Music is handled by H. H. Bandara and lighting by Gayan Nalaka and Upali Weerasinghe respectively. With Sunil Hewavitharane’s makeup, Saliya Ilangakoon and Thilina Prabath’s stage management, the new production of the play is produced and organized by Jude Sirimal on behalf of Nirmala Prakashana.

On the final day of the festival March 4, Prof. Ediriweera Sarathchandra’s ever-popular play “Sinhabahu” will be staged.

The play is a prescribed text for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Sinhala syllabus. The festival is organised by Jude Srimal and all seats are box planned and tickets are available at the Lionel Wendt theatre.
