D oe a deer a female deer, ray a drop of golden sun’! What memories do these familiar words and its happy lively tune evoke in the fans of The Sound of Music?

Maria running across the beautiful alpine mountain tops singing ‘The Hills are Alive’. ‘I am sixteen, going on seventeen’, ‘So Long, Farewell’ at the ball, or the poignant moment when the Baron’s voice breaks with emotion as he sings Edelweiss? What a treasure trove of memories come flooding back, bringing with it the sweet memory of something good, timeless and precious.

The Sound of Music, with over 1,500 Broadway performances, six Tony Awards, three million albums sold and five Academy Awards to its name, is one of the best loved Musicals of all time.

And Colombo will soon be privy to its own private viewing of the Broadway Classic as Cinnamon Life presents the award winning musical production by Andrew Lloyd Weber and David Ian’s The Really Useful Groups.

The 375 young theatre enthusiasts, ranging from ages to 5-15, who signed up for the auditions to play the parts of the Von Trapp Children in South Asia’s first international theatre performance of ‘The Sound of Music’, presented by Cinnamon Life.

Playing Freidrich will be Leeth Meth Singhage and Niven Nanaykara (St Jospehs College). Louisa will be played by Amaya Perera (Lyceum International School)NesandiWickramanayke (Bishop’s College, Colombo). Bringing the funny and entertaining Kurt to life will be Lohan TharindaPerrea (Lyceum International School) and Venuka Rison Joseph (St. Joseph’s College). The sweet and shy Brigitta will be played by EvniSapugoda (Lyceum International School) and TashiyanaDevarajan (Asian international school). Little Marta will be played by Kimaya Wijesuriya (Colombo International School) andAyraWadood (Bishop’s College, Colombo). Selected to play the lovable Gretl, the youngest role in the production, are Senushki De Silva (St. Bridgets Convent) and Naadya Tranchell (Ladies College).
