Galle Face 70th Independence Day celebrations’ rehearsals on

Rehearsals for the 70th Independence Day celebrations to be held at Galle Face, began this week. This year’s celebrations will be held under the theme “One nation”. Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, and The Countess of Wessex, will represent Her Majesty the Queen at the 70th anniversary celebration as Chief Guests. An Army spokesman said 24 Regiments comprising 150 Officers and 3,500 Soldiers, will participate in the Independence Day parade this year.

The Navy will have 30 Officers and 1,200 Sailors, while the Air Force will have 40 Officers and 800 Airmen, along with 961 policemen participating. Civil Defence Force and National Cadet Corps members will also join in the march-past. A cultural pageant with about 550 dancers and musicians too will participate in the parade. Meanwhile, there will be special traffic arrangements in the week preceding Independence Day.
Deputy Inspector General (Traffic & Road Safety) L.S. Pathinayake said that traffic will be diverted only along Galle road, in front of Galle Face Green. He said that, over 3,500 policemen will be deployed for traffic management as well as for overall security.
