More than 200 teachers recently appointed to serve in remote areas in the eastern province staged a protest opposite the eastern province governor’s office against remarks by Governor Rohitha Bogollagama that they should not be demanding transfers to better areas. They were among unemployed graduates who were appointed recently by the provincial councils after several months of protests.

Mr. Bogollagama at the ceremony to hand over the appointment letters told them that they should not be now demanding transfers as the objective was to fill the vacancies in the remote areas which are hit by teacher transfers. The lack of teachers has been a severe problem in schools in the eastern province. (PCK)
