More than 6,000 schools will be provided with Laptops next year, with an allocation of Rs 5,000 million for the project. Under the programme, schools will receive between 10-50 Laptops, from above Grade 6. Schools with over 2,000 students will receive 50 , between 1,000-2,000 students will receive 20-40 Laptops, and less than 1,000 students will receive 10-25 Laptops.

“The Laptops will be hired on a 3-year contract, so that the Ministry of Education (MoE) does not have ownership of them. The Supplier will be responsible for repairs, maintenance and replacement if required,” a senior officer said, adding it would enable the MoE to save money.

“Under the previous system, if a Laptop broke, the MoE would have to repair it. If it is outstation, it adds to the difficulty. In this case, the Supplier should replace/repair the Laptop within a day,” he added. The MoE will make online payment for the repairs. “We have called for contracts and it will be awarded soon,” he said. - DW
