A modern High Voltage Laboratory (HVL) and Testing Facility, built at an estimated Rs 35 million, was ceremonially opened last Tuesday at the Dept of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa (UoM), under the patronage UoM Chancellor Prof. K.K.Y.W. Perera as Chief Guest.

A fully fledged modern HVL was a long felt need for university education and the Electrical Engineering industry of Sri Lanka. This laboratory has been named after Prof Rohan Lucas in recognition of his long and dedicated service of over 45 years, towards HV Engineering Education of the UoM and the country.

The HVL consists of HV Impulse Generator, HV AC Test System, HV DC Test System, Artificial Rain Making Equipment and associated control equipment and auxiliary devices.
It is capable of HV Impulse Tests, HV AC and DC tests up to 500kV and 300kV respectively, under different environmental conditions.

LTL Holdings (Pvt) Ltd has joined hands with the UoM as its industrial sponsor in the construction of the HVL, which contributed Rs 5 million towards the renovation and civil construction works. This is another CSR project by LTL Holdings (Pvt) Ltd to develop university education in Sri Lanka.

This HVL will be of immense support to Undergraduate and Postgraduate Engineering students for their laboratory experiments, design and research projects and for the HV Research Group of the UoM led by Prof Rohan Lucas and Dr Rasara Samarasinghe. Further, the Testing Facility is capable of carrying out HV Transformer Testing, HV Cable Testing, Meter Testing, HV Insulator and Bushing Testing, HV Switchgear Testing, HV CT/PT/ and CVT Testing, which has been a long standing need within the industry.

This is the only Test facility in Sri Lanka of this caliber equipment, including an Impulse Generator Test set, HVAC Test set and HVDC Test set that are capable of conducting most of the testing required by the Power industry in the country. LTL Holdings (Pvt) Ltd CEO, Eng. U.D. Jayawardana was the Guest of Honour, while UoM Vice Chancellor Prof. Ananda Jayawardna and Dean of the Engineering Faculty also participated.
