3rd International Pali Conference at University of Peradeniya
View(s):The Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the University of (UoP) Prof O.G. Dayaratne Banda addressing the 3rd International Pali Conference, at the Senate Room of the UoP, said there is a crisis in every section of the world, because people are more materialistic bent than spiritually. He said this trend is problematic and it is time now to develop how best one could go into the world of spiritual development. Towards this end, the Buddha’s teaching could be the base for a society to develop the good and greatness of mankind.
Prof Banda further said there is a vast difference between practice and knowledge. “There should be an active practice from knowledge gained. How to practice gains from the teachings of the Buddha. The founding fathers of the Faculty comes great figures such as Prof G.P. Malalasekera and Prof Sarathchandra,” he added The Conference was chaired by the Anunayake Thera of Malwatta Ven Dr Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera UoP Vice Chancellor Prof Upul B. Dissanayake said, if one has to know the teachings of the Dhamma or that of Buddha, Pali is a much better language and all should strive to learn it. He said that he was happy that the Conference was on the University calendar for the 3rd time, and this has brought about an opening within the University
The Keynote address was delivered by the Postgraduate Institute of Pali & Buddhist Studies Director Prof Kotepitiye Rahula Among others who addressed the Conference were Head of the Dept of Pali & Buddhist Studies, Prof B.G.D. Jayawardene, Malwatta Maha Vihare Anunayake Dr Vithasiri Thera, Anunayake of Asgiri Maha Vihare Anunayake Ven Agramaha Panditha Ananmaduwe Sri Dhammadassi Thera and Ven Okkampitiya Yassi Thera
