The Bursar of the Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS) who was wanted in connection with the alleged fraud of Rs 7.5 million of the University of Peradeniya (UoP) was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Dept. The suspect Mahesh Iddawela is alleged to have committed this fraud continuously for nearly 10 years.

UoP Vice Chancellor Prof Upul B. Disssanayake had lodged a complaint on June 20, 2017. The ruse adopted was that the suspect had told the PGIS Director that, as the University is receiving a small interest from a State Bank, the monies be transferred to another bank.

After the Director’s order was obtained, the suspect is alleged to have altered the instructions and taken out the money and deposited in his own account.
The suspect is due to be produced before a Magistrate. -L.B.Senaratne
