With all corners of the nation on high alert for dengue, a school clean-up campaign took place recently in Kandy. Hillwood College, Kandy took steps to involve students, teachers and parents of the school in this task.

Speaking to the Mirror Magazine, Nelum De Alwis, Principal of Hillwood College outlined how the schools’ communities participated in the clean -up of the school premises and the surrounding areas.

“Parents and past pupils counting over 100 participated in the dengue eradication campaign” she explained.

“As a practice, our minor staff clean the school premises in the morning to make sure that the premises are kept clean. What we found out was that more than in the school premises the surrounding areas needed a thorough clean -up especially in areas bordering the school such as Rajaphilla Mawatha and Saranankara Road. These are tourist areas and we gathered a considerable amount of cans and plastic bottles thrown in those areas,” DeAlwis added.

When asked how this would be continued in the future she added that parents had agreed to conduct a similar dengue eradication campaign a week prior to school re-opening for the third term.
