Southern Province on alert for pharmacies hit by floods selling drugs

The Southern Province Health Services Director has requested owners of pharmacies affected by the recent floods to refrain from selling medicines which could be unsuitable for consumption.

The Director P. Wijesuriya said police are conducting raids to apprehend those who are selling such medicines.

The Southern Province has around 540 private and state owned pharmacies.The Health Services Department has said if the pharmacy owners were unable to remove the drugs and store them in suitable locations before being hit by the floods the drugs should not be sold.

Authorities have asked the public to inform the office or the nearest Public Health Inspector Offices in the three districts of Galle, Matara amd Hambantota if they believe unsuitable medicines are being sold.

Meanwhile Galle District’s food and drugs inspector, K. H. Jayaratne has also requested the public to inform the Health Services Department if drugs are being sold above the government stipulated prices.

Southern Province Health Services Director further said the licences of those who violate the above rules will not be renewed at the annual issuing of licences.
