Fifty Advanced Level candidates eligible to enter the Medical Faculty will be extended the option of following their course at the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), under a proposal by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Students will be selected on merit after the University submits the list of students eligible to enter the Medical Faculty, UGC Chairman Prof Mohan de Silva told the Education Times. The successful students will be enlisted into the volunteer Force, in keeping with KDU requirements, and will be called up only in the event of an emergency.

Basic military training will also be provided. Prof de Silva said this is the first time that the KDU has offered to take a batch of 50 students free of charge.
The list will be submitted shortly, enabling the students to commence their course before year end.

Armed Forces’ Commanders have supported the move . “The programme will be beneficial to students, as they will not be affected by strikes which cripple university functions,” he added. - Damith Wickremasekara
