Lanka Hospitals Corporation Ltd (LHCL) has plans to set up operations in the Maldives and the Seychelles, officials say.

“We are already conducting special clinics in these two countries since 2014. We’re at the feasibility study stage of starting a LHCL branch in Male and Seychelles,” Dr. Prasad Medawatte, Group CEO LHCL told the Business Times. He said that since it involves a huge cost, LHCL is trying to find a cost efficient way to do this project.

Meanwhile Seychelles President Danny Faure, during a visit to Sri Lanka last week, visited two private hospitals in Colombo – Lanka Hospitals and Hemas Hospital in Thalawathugoda.

His visit to the specialist medical centres, is geared towards further consolidating the strong mutual respect and cooperation between Seychelles and
Sri Lanka’s leading healthcare facilities especially for highly specialised medical procedures and services, the Office of the President of the Seychelles said in a statement.

LHCL’s core business units, cardiology and nephrology have remained the key focus of the hospital and in-patient (excluding Surgical and Cardiology) accounted for 22 per cent of the top line during the first nine months of 2016.

Top line growth limited to 6.6 per cent year on year in Q3 FY 16 and 6.2 per cent (YoY) in first nine months of FY 16.

The low growth came as a result of the hospital reaching a maximum on room utilisation, analysts said.

The hospital converted the administrative floors into additional beds (approximately 16) during this FY to address the short term surge in demand.

Data shows that the healthcare per capita in Sri Lanka is significantly higher than in most other Asian and middle-income countries. This is reflected in high hospital bed penetration of 4.0 beds per 1,000 population – much higher than in similar developing countries, and more in line with developed countries where the bed penetration is around 5.0 (2011).  -(DEC)
