A team of officers from the Cinnamon Gardens Police are expected to visit Musaeus College, Colombo soon and interview school officials, as part of the probe into last November’s fire at the College .

On Monday (16), Cinnamon Gardens Police informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate that, according to the report submitted by the Government Analyst’s Dept, the fire on November 4, was an act of arson.

Police further informed court that the Government Analyst’s report indicates that, a person or persons had doused the auditorium’s stage with kerosene and ignited it, which caused extensive damage to the auditorium.

A senior officer of the station’s Crime Branch told this newspaper that, as it has now been confirmed the fire had been deliberately started, the police would conduct a thorough investigation.

Senior Government Analyst W.A.R. Fernando, who compiled the report, confirmed to the Sunday Times, he had ruled out an electrical fault or, any other probable cause for the fire. Kerosene was also found, he added.

Musaeus College Principal Mrs S. Dandeniya declined to comment.
