Nipuni Amali began sewing as a youngster, having watched her mother stitch clothes for herself. Years later, the now IT engineer found herself taking a giant step with her once hobby. The result- ‘Vintage Closet Colombo.’ In business since 2015, the online boutique stays true to its name with a range of dreamy, feminine and vintage cuts and styles.

The 30 year old IT engineer and new mother’s flair and passion for designing and sewing were always evident. Although her interest stirred watching her mother as a child, it wasn’t until Nipuni was waiting for her A/L results that she began sewing clothes herself. “I didn’t have much access to the internet back then,” and used to flip through newspapers and magazines for design ideas which she would later alter for herself.

Choosing to study IT rather fashion design didn’t mean closing the door on one of her passions, she explains. Although she works full time in IT “I wanted to develop my skills in fashion design as well”. Having followed a dressmaking course, Nipuni went from wearing her own creations to taking on requests from her friends. Soon, she was balance working, studying and the inflow of orders coming in. “Opening a fashion boutique was always a dream,” she admits, a dream she held on to while completing her higher studies.

Last year, Nipuni’s dream took its first flight with her first collection for the boutique. Ever since, she has been showcased at the Colombo Design Market and is working on a brand new collection for this year. Her collection, while staying true to her love for classic lines and cuts is practical and wearable. “I watch a lot of old Hindi and English movies,” she laughs. 1950’s inspired flares and billowy sleeves manage to capture Nipuni’s love for old romance while comfortably meshing into the current trends and market.

The boutique also handles custom made pieces along with their readymade dresses, blouses and pants. All a buyer needs to do is hand in their measurements and can even be assured of delivery within the Colombo city limits. While Vintage Closest Colombo has been the realization of a lifelong dream for Nipuni, the entrepreneurial working mother also hopes her work will inspire similar young women. “It is very difficult” she confesses. “But if you really want to do it, you can.”
