In a unique salvage operation, Walkers Colombo Shipyard (Pvt) Ltd, a subsidiary of MTD Walkers PLC, salvaged the 600 tonne dredger Sayura, belonging to the Fishery Harbour Corporation, which was grounded near the Hikkaduwa Fishery Harbour.

Sayura, a high capacity grab-type dredger belonging to the Fishery Harbour had run aground on an outer break-water reef while on an active dredging operation. The dredger had moved on to the reef area and was stranded on a flat rock bed, making it impossible to move using a tug or vessel without damaging the bottom of the dredger, Walkers said in a media release.

“What was thought to be a high risk operation was conducted by Walkers Colombo Shipyard, over a period of three weeks, which saw the use of six numbers of 100 ton capacity hydraulic jacks to lift the front of the vessel allowing the insertion of multilayer rubber inflatable rollers under the bottom of the ship. Once all the rollers were inflated the ship was pulled into the sea using ropes connected to heavy anchors,” the release added.

“This was one of the most challenging jobs undertaken by the staff of Walkers Colombo Shipyard, showcasing their versatility and ability to respond to unique situations ” said Dr. Sarath Obeysekera, CEO of Walkers Colombo Shipyard (Pvt) Ltd.
