Preparations are underway in the North today to commemorate those killed in the three decade- long war.

The remembrance ceremonies are scheduled to be held in cemeteries once constructed by the LTTE across the northern province. Residents of Kilinochchi had cleaned up Kanagapuram and Mulankaavil cemeteries this week.

In Mullaithivu, arrangements have been made to remember the war dead in Vannivilankulam cemetery.

Leader of Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) Mavai Senathirajah in a statement said remembering the dead is a basic human right and people should be allowed to mourn their loved ones.

“Thousands of lives were lost during the three decades of war which affected people mentally and physically…….By remembering their loved ones, people could move towards healing their inner wounds,” the statement said.

On Friday Jaffna University students held a remembrance ceremony within the premises.

The LTTE marks the Maaveerar Naal or Martyrs Day annually on November 27.
