The fourth stage of the Gregory’s Lake development project in Nuwara Eliya is currently ongoing. Authorities say 50% of the project has already been completed. The Rs. 105 million project is being conducted in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourist Board, the Central Province Department of Tourism and the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council.

The Sri Lanka Navy is currently engaged in assisting the project and 132 navy personnel are currently working on the project’s fourth stage. The project, which began on June 21, 2016, is now in its fifth month.

The project however, recently ran into controversy when the entire lake was accidentally drained during the development process giving rise to accusations that environmental considerations were ignored during the development project.

First built in 1874, the iconic lake had not undergone any form of desilting until 1978. Since then, there have been numerous projects to beautify the lake area and preserve it.
